We are in the final stages of developing our Social and Emotional Support Systems Implementation Plan. The vision of this plan is to establish a psychologically safe and supportive environment that facilitates social reconnection, personal growth, and resiliency for all members of the Parker community.
The four core elements of the plan include Mental Health, Social/Emotional Learning, Restorative Practices, and Community Wellness.
Mental Health: Establish core knowledge and competencies for all staff regarding basic mental health, trauma and resiliency. Staff will be able to identify students who are experiencing emotional distress and make an appropriate determination regarding when parents need to be notified and referrals to the school’s counselors are indicated.
Social-Emotional Learning: Provide lessons and activities designed specifically to build social and emotional skills as a foundational component of Parker’s character education program. Guided by the values articulated in STRIVE, the Ways of Being model of social and emotional learning will provide a school-wide framework in which to structure lessons. During the 2020-21 academic year, focus will be placed on the following competencies:
Emotional awareness & literacy
Identity (emphasis on culture and race)
Ethical decision making
Restorative Practices: Implement Restorative Practices in all classrooms conducive to community building and psychological safety, with emphasis on identity, equity and inclusion. All classroom teachers will gain competency in conducting class check-ins and gain understanding of how restorative practices can be utilized to foster engagement and build community.
Community Wellness: Establish practices to promote connection and monitor needs of individuals in the Parker community, including: faculty and staff, students, and families.
Upon approval, the plan will be made available to the Parker Community.
